DESCRIPTION: ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM THE REJECTED CHAPTERS OF "THE BRAVO". 1 leaf, 9-1/8" x 12-7/8", verso reinforced at an earlier date, in Coopers minute almost illegible script with numerous cross outs and corrections.
CONDITION: Mild toning to edges otherwise VERY GOOD.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The page is boldly signed "Fenimore Cooper" lower right, with three early inscriptions in French:
1) This fragment of variants for his novel 'The Bravo' was given to me by Mr Cooper on the eve of his departure from Paris, 24 or 25 August 1833. [Signed:] Am[elie] Kautz.
2) Handwriting quite remarkable for its abbreviations and for somebody who knows them!!! This fragment was given to me by Mlle Ame[lie] Kautze [sic] 6 June 1834 — [Signed:] B[ardiz.]
3) fragment given to Octave Le Caille by M. Bardiz de Ste Marie 1856 [Signed:] O. La Caille.
This leaf has been confirmed by Professor Lance Schachterle who has written extensively about the missing chapters in "A Long False Start: The Rejected Chapters of Cooper's "The Bravo", PROCEEDINGS OF THE AMERICAN ANTIQUARIAN SOCIETY Vol. 115, page numbers 81 to 126. A photo copy of this will be provided.
