THE EARLIEST OBTAINABLE PRINTING OF "ALICE"

AUTHOR: CARROLL, Lewis: (C. L. Dodgson)

TITLE: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

PUBLISHER: New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1866.

DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION SECOND ISSUE. 1 vol., frontispiece & 42 illustrations by John Tenniel. Bound in publisher's original gilt stamped red cloth, spine expertly relined, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine strengthened, dark green pastedowns and endpapers, faint gift inscription to front endleaf dated Nov. 1868.

CONDITION: Back corners still quite square, all edges gilt, internally clean and bright, overall a VERY GOOD+ copy so often today found in shabby condition and heavily restored.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This is the earliest obtainable issue with the Appleton cancel title page. Macmillan printed around 2,000 copies of the book in 1865, but both artist and author were unhappy with the poor quality printing and insisted it was reprinted before being published. Macmillan sold the rest of the print run to Appleton in New York who published a US edition using a new title page but with the first printing sheets from the 1865 London edition.
