DESCRIPTION: FIRST LONDON EDITION. 1 vol., illustrated By John Tenniel.  Bound in full green morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, spine panels with gilt red morocco floral onlays, covers ruled in gilt, front cover with gilt floral corner pieces, front cover with a multi-color morocco onlay of the smoking caterpillar, rear cover with a multi-color morocco onlay of the Duchess, gilt dentelles, all edges gilt, original cloth covers and spine bound in the rear, by Alfred de Sauty.

CONDITION: Spine sunned as well as edges of covers, internally clean and bright, hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, a VERY GOOD copy by a distinguished binder.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Alfred de Sauty (1870-1949) was active in London around 1898 to 1923 before moving to Chicago. He signed London produced works 'de S' or 'de Sauty'. For thirteen years, the "Extra Bindery" was headed by Alfred de Sauty, who was recruited by T. E. Donnelley from the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London. De Sauty immediately set the standard for American bookbinding.  De Sauty retired from binding in 1935.
