DESCRIPTION: 2 vols., 4to., 12-1/4" x 8-3/4", printed on handmade paper, limited to 200 signed and numbered copies by the editor of which this is #59, calligraphic text and decorations by Margery O. Erickson printed in red and black, 12 coloured plates Edmund Dulac and Willy Pogany. Vol. 1 bound in full red morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, covers elaborately tooled in a Persian manner, gilt dentelles, marbled pastedowns and endpapers, top edge gilt, others uncut, Vol. 2 in cloth and contained in a clamshell box with red morocco spine to match, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe.
CONDITION: Both in FINE CONDITION as issued, with the original slipcase slightly rubbed.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Edward Fitzgerald translated the Rubaiyat no less than five times. The editor's purpose in this beautifully produced edition is to provide a 'composite' version of Fitzgerald's text, by selecting what is best from each of his five editions. Volume 1 contains the result of these personal choices. Volume 2 contains, following a general introduction, the text of all five editions of Fitzgerald's translation compared to the editor's personal selection.
