DESCRIPTION: FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. 1 vol., 7-1/2" x 5-13/16", 5 parts in one volume, woodcut armorial shield on general and sectional titles, large woodcut opening initials and repeated type ornament, a few leaves in discourse I stained, repair to upper corner of a2, repaired tear in Cc2 of discourse III. Bound in early 20th-century red morocco, sides with white and green onlays and all-over gilt tooling forming a strapwork design with massed pointille tools and fleurons at center, spine compartments with repeated white fleuron in square green onlaid border, gilt doublures, red silk doublures and endpapers, all edges gilt.
CONDITION: Inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, amendments added to text in an early hand, faded inscription on title, small pencil note to upper corner of lat blank leaf (possibly purchased from) “Porter, 23. 2. 1957", overall a FINE copy in an exceptional binding of a scarce work.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The collected edition cited by Palau has a variant title and is undated. Considering it 'later' than the separate issues, Palau calls for 12 preliminary leaves as opposed to 8. The present copy, with 8 preliminary leaves, is dated 1616 on the general title and part titles (as are the separate issues). Goldsmith G-118 (4 parts only).
