Rackham's illustrations for the text were first published by New York's Limited Editions Club in 1940. It was the last work Rackham illustrated before his death in 1939. Rackham longed for a number of years to illustrate the book. Completed during his last illness, the result was "among his most affecting works, replete with wit, invention, and carefully controlled emotion" (ODNB).
