ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This popular novel, dedicated to Queen Charlotte, was written from an idea that Johnson had in which his hero eventually marries and lives in a state of 'perfect felicity'. The novel first published in 1790, quickly went through five editions plus translations into German and French. Miss Knight who knew both Johnson and Reynolds lived for some years in Rome and Naples where she knew Nelson and the Hamiltons. Her autobiography was published in 1801 in 2 volumes.
