DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION PRESENTATION COPY. 1 vol., 7" x 4-5/8", inscribed by the author at top of title-page: "Jessie Prothero from GM", bound in the original green wavy-grain cloth, Carter's Binding A, with four single-word corrections in Meredith's hand on pages 13, 51, 173, &195, laid in is a 1 page autograph letter signed from Meredith to another person ("Dear Madam"), Box Hill, Dorking, dated 18 November 1894.

CONDITION: Front inner hinge starting, mild general handling, overall a VERY GOOD copy. Housed in a 1/4 red morocco slipcase, raised bands, gilt lettered spine.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Meredith lived near the Prothero family for a time. Jessie Prothero is surly in some way related to the Prothero family. Thomas Prothero, a wealthy lawyer was a close friend and benefactor of Meredith in his youth. Their relationship was significant to Meredith's early life and career. He provided financial assistance and general support to the young and struggling writer.
