Simpson in volume 1, bound in full red morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spines, covers triple ruled in gilt, gilt corner pieces, gilt dentelles, top edges gilt, others uncut, marbled pastedowns and endpapers, by Bedford, gilt bookplate of Robert Hoe to the front pastedown of each volume, additional engraved armorial bookplate of Livingston Phelps to endpapers.

CONDITION: Internally clean and bright, inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spines fine, some minor rubbing to a couple of covers otherwise A HANDSOM SET.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Rev. Todd's edition of Milton's poetical works "is a most admirable one, both in the biographical part of it and where he appears in the character of editor and annotator" (Allingbone, 1300). Also includes extensive notes and critical essays by Addison and Dr. Johnson. Symmons' "excellent" collection of the prose works includes a biographical notice of Milton as well as critical remarks (Lowndes, 1300). The final volume, a second edition of Todd's "Account", offers "an incomparable index of words, applicable to any edition" (Lowndes, 1300)
