Bound in full brown morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, covers ruled and paneled in gilt, gilt arms of George I to both covers, gilt dentelles, top edge gilt, others uncut as issued, marbled pastedowns and endpapers, original wrappers and backstrip bound in, by Durvand.

CONDITION: Inner and outer hinges fine, head and foot of spine fine, internally clean and bright, engraved bookplate of Cortland Bishop to front pastedown, a VERY GOOD+ copy.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Cortland Bishop inherited and expanded a major family art and literature collection, becoming a prominent art and book collector during the golden age of American bibliomania. He also once owned the Anderson Galleries and the Paris Times.

The binder Lucien Durvand (1852–1924) was a prominent French bookbinder based in Paris, celebrated for his high-end, luxury period bindings during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Durvand routinely bound elite editions for famous French art dealers and publishers, most notably Goupil & Co, creating lavish custom covers for historical monographs, biographies, and royal histories.
