AUTHOR: SPENSER, Edmund.

TITLE: The Faerie Queen: The Shepheards Calender: Together With The Other Works of Englands Arch-Poet,....

PUBLISHER: London: by H. L. for Mathew Lownes, 1611.

DESCRIPTION: FIRST COLLECTED EDITION FIRST ISSUE. 1 vol., 10-7/8" x 7-7/8", title-page to the second part dated 1609, a complicated book to collate but this copy collates perfectly to Pforzheimer 972 with one exception in that it lacks the one blank leaf pp[57-58] after the "Shepheards Calender" but has all the other required original blanks and is otherwise complete.  Bound in late 19th C. 1/2 brown morocco, ribbed gilt decorated spine, hinges neatly repaired, edges tinted red.

CONDITION: Largely clean and bright throughout, some occasional mild toning virtually no foxing, leaf A1 and second to last leaf "M" neatly laid down, paper repair to 1 leaf affecting 1 word supplied in an early hand, overall still a VERY GOOD copy of the first issue.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In an early hand to the front blank endleaf there is a note that this copy had been compared to the copy in the King's library at the British Museum and found that it was complete.  In a note under that in another hand it states that the "foregoing note was written by Rev. Joseph Hunter author of Hallamshire" the former owner of this copy.
