DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION. 1 vol., 6-7/8" x 4-5/8", [iv]119 [iii], 82, 64, [ii], 52 pp, complete, with the engraved frontis by William Marshall, bound in full near contemporary speckled calf, red speckled edges, housed in a brown morocco solinder slipcase.
CONDITION: Inner and outer hinges fine, internally clean and bright, reinforcing to the foredge of the recto of the fronts and verso of the title-page, later replacement pastedowns and endpapers, overall still a VERY GOOD copy.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Pforzheimer 995 considers this edition the earliest state with the extra large capital "F" and "A" in the title.
On pages 29-30 of "Poems" is the very delightful poem "A Supplement of an imperfect Copy of Verses of Mr. Wil. Shakespears" in which Suckling continues nine lines of the "Rape of Lucrece". There are further Shakespearian references on pages 35 and 61 of "Poems" and on pages 2, 35 and 45 of "The Goblins".
