ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Cotton assembled one of the finest collections of manuscripts and printed books which he freely made available to scholars; both Raleigh and Bacon consulted his library. Envied by kings and politicians, his library was raided, sequestered, sealed and finally purchased by the nation from his grandson, after which a fire damaged many manuscripts. Today the collection is one of the many jewels of the British Library.
