AUTHOR: CARROLL, Lewis [Charles Lutwidge Dodgson].
TITLE: 1 page autograph letter signed (ALS). Christ Church, 1878.
DESCRIPTION: 1 page autograph letter signed, 5" x 7-7/8", in purple ink, toning/offset to edges on 3 sides, Christ Church dated May 25, 1878 to Herbert which reads:
"Dear Herbert, Thanks for your critique on "Word Links". I send the new edition. Your objection to choosing a doublet at random, as "disheartening", must be set against that raised by the Guilford party, that to make out Chains made up from you robbed the game of all interest, & that the only ones they cared to try were words chosen at random. From my experience I should say the chance of an impossible doublet is, with words of 3 letters, next to nothing, 4 letters, 1/100, 5 letters, 1 / 20. Yrs Afft CLD"
