DESCRIPTION: FIRST EDITION INSCRIBED BY STEVENSON'S MOTHER THE BENZ COPY. 1 vol.,  inscribed on the front endleaf soon after the book was published "To Miss Pigot with every kind wish from M. I. Stevenson, May 1885.",  with the leather bookplate of "Doris Louise Benz" to the front pastedown, publisher's original gilt stamped blue cloth, in the preferred binding with the apostrophe in "Child's" on the spine, top edge gilt, others uncut.

CONDITION: Inner and outer hinges fine, faint rubbing without loss to head and foot of spine, back corners still square, overall a rather BRIGHT SHARP copy, housed in a 1/2 blue morocco slipcase.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: After the death of Stevenson's father, he and his mother were often together.  She accompanied him to America when he spent some time at Saranac and on his voyage through the South Sea Islands which followed.  When he settled in Samoa, she became a permanent member of the household.
