DESCRIPTION: WITH THE GILT ARMS OF MADAME DE POMPADOUR. 1 vol., 11-3/8" x 9", engraved frontis and 100 engraved vignettes after Gillot. Bound in contemporary full speckled calf over cords, gilt decorated spine, gilt lettered brown morocco spine label, covers ruled in blind, covers with the gilt arms of the Marquise de Pompadour, marbled pastedowns and endpapers.

CONDITION: Hinges expertly repaired, head and foot of spine expertly renewed, occasional toning to a few pages but largely clean and bright throughout.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This volume was number 706 in the auction of her books held in 1765, the Catalogue des livres de la bibliotheque de feue... A handsome example from the library from this remarkable woman, born into the haute bourgeoisie as Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, but elevated to become the official maitresse-en-titre to King Louis XV, who ennobled her under the ancient (but extinct) title of Pompadour.
